In addition to the Napoleon fish, the site boasts a diverse array of reef inhabitants. Divers can encounter a multitude of reef fish, along with turtles, stingrays, groupers, moray eels, various slugs, and sea plants. During our recent diving season, we were fortunate to witness remarkable sightings of whale sharks at this location, enhancing its reputation as a hotspot for unforgettable marine encounters.

GODA KUPATHA

MAXIMUM DEPTH: 18m

MINIMUM DEPTH: 6m

BOAT TRIP: 10 minutes

MINIMUM LEVEL: Open Water

The Goda Kupatha dive site is just a short boat ride from Sun Diving Centre. At Goda Kupatha divers can mainly explore rocky areas consisting of colorful corralled reefs, however since the Tsunami parts of these corals have sadly eroded but its by far one of our best dive sites for coral life. Recently we have noticed that some beautiful soft corals have been returning and it is a beautiful site to see.

However, because of this it is especially important to always be aware and mindful of your diving practices and buoyancy to preserve the coral life here at Goda Kupatha, remembering corals are incredibly sensitive and can die or have severe long last effects from just one human touch. Almost everything in the ocean is alive or part of the natural habitat.

There is also still plenty of marine life living here consisting of reef fish, different types of rays, Porcupine, Puffer Fish and crustaceans.

GODA GALA (LORD NELSON WRECK/ROCK ISLAND)

MAXIMUM DEPTH: 10m

MINIMUM DEPTH: 2m

BOAT TRIP: 5 minutes

LEVEL: Beginner

This dive site is known by multiple names as there are a number of different attractions including the reefs (Rock Island) and a recent ship wreck (Lord Nelson) which sunk in the year 2000. Additionally, we can find a Statue and Old Motorbike to capture some cool memories with.

Rock Island is one of our most common dive spots due to the easy access from Unawatuna beach (5-10 minute boat ride) and is where we visit with our beginner divers.

Why?

 – It is less affected by outgoing currents

– The short boat ride from Sun Diving Center

– Over 50 different species of marine life visible even at just 10 meters

– Starting with a shallow 10 metre dive to gradually expose you to the world of SCUBA diving

– We want you to have the best first-time experience, so we bring you to explore part of Lord Nelson ship wreck that lays down there (if you can make it!)

Many underwater explorers enjoy this site due to the variety of species and life they can find within the shipwreck and living by the reefs, these include colorful reef fish, blue boxfish, schools of barracuda, morays eels, lobsters and much more. Also, you have an interesting surprise when you find the other attractions.. is it a huge fish you’re seeing in the distance, or the perfect photo opportunity with the Statue?
This site is suitable for all levels, and is perfect for a refresher back in to diving after a break off.

THE GALLE SHIP WRECK

MAXIMUM DEPTH: 18m

MINIMUM DEPTH: 8m

BOAT TRIP: 20-25 minutes

MINIMUM LEVEL: Open Water

The cause of the Galle Ship Wreck dive site is still unconfirmed and left for the diver’s imagination as the area has been filled in during the development of the harbour. However, it is believed that the site was either a shipwreck or possibly a place where a cannon had been abandoned, and then has been cut making the remaining pieces of the wreck scatter over the sandy bottom. This means that this wreck is not intact and easy to explore, but is still worth visiting.

Marine life at this site includes corals, sponges, numerous species of reef fish including snappers, angelfish, porcupine fish and moray eels.

THE RALAGALA WRECK

MAXIMUM DEPTH: 20m

MINIMUM DEPTH: 8m

BOAT TRIP: 25-30 minutes

MINIMUM LEVEL: Open Water

This is a wreck dive site located in Galle, closer to Hikkaduwa Beach. Ralagala wreck continues to have some remains for us divers to explore such as oil barrels, transmission parts and undamaged parts of the great hull. The maximum depth of this interesting dive is 20 meters; however we remain around 15 meters to see the best parts of the ancient ship wreck.

Fortunately, this wreck provides shade and cover for many marine species including snappers, porcupine fish, angelfish, pufferfish, giant moray and large titan triggerfish.
